We now have

The reply at (72) from the G.M.C. who accept our proposal inPara.3 of (48), provided that they are given satisfactory information as to the methods of and standards required at the examinations held in Free China.

(ii) A memorandum from Chungking on

Hongkong University relief

(enclosure to (64)), which states that opinion at the Embassy on the use of University funds appears to be evenly divided.

(iii) Dr. Gordon King's opinion

(enclosure to (64)) that the University funds should be left intact until a representative body can make formal recommendations.

(iv) A dunning letter from the Foreign

the income derived from Hongkong University investments, of the amount advanced as assistance to Hongkong University students in Free China.

Now

We should decide upon the

constitution of the Committee to represent the University. The members should be:-

(i) The Head of the Eastern Department,

Colonial Office.

(ii) The Medical Adviser, Colonial Office

(iii) The Manager, The Hongkong and

Shanghai Banking Corporation (at present Mr. Morse)

(iv) The representative of Hongkong

University on the Executive Committee of the Universities
